  • 07/16/09--05:50: Census Bureau: The counting of America (chan 1554613)
  • Why do we have a census?
It’s mandated by the U.S. Constitution. Article I, Section 2 states that an “actual enumeration shall be made within three years after the first meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent term of 10 years.” The first census, in 1790, was a modest affair, costing only $45,000 and employing 650 marshals and their assistants. The 2010 census, by contrast, will cost upward of $15 billion. Questionnaires will go to 145 million households, and those that do not respond can expect a visit from one of the 140,000 census workers who...

  • 04/02/10--11:27: Are conservatives committing Census suicide? (chan 1554613)
  • Egged on by anti-Big Government Republicans like Reps. Michele Bachmann (MN) and Ron Paul (TX), some conservative voters are reportedly refusing to participate in this year's Census — a serious mistake, argues Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC). Not only are the anti-Census arguments bunk, he says, if the "count me out" movement takes off, we might actually see fewer Republicans in Congress, since the Census is used to allocate congressional districts. Are conservatives killing themselves politically?

Census boycotts are "political suicide": McHenry's right to "scold" anti-Census conservatives...

  • Several right wing personalities, including Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and FOX News host Glenn Beck, have suggested the 2010 Census is an invasion of privacy, and have encouraged Americans not to participate. But if conservative voters shun the Census en masse, the GOP could lose Republican seats in Congress and state legislatures. How to counter that? Enter another prominent conservative, Karl Rove, who's made a new PSA urging all Americans fill out their forms. "The current distrust of Washington should not encourage people from being counted," the former Bush adviser told the Washington...

  • 06/03/10--05:00: James O'Keefe's 'clueless' Census sting (chan 1554613)
  • In his quest to expose "every dishonest politician, bureaucrat, and business in America," conservative filmmaker James "ACORN pimp" O'Keefe has a new target — the U.S. Census Bureau. While working as a Census worker in New Jersey, O'Keefe filmed his bosses instructing Census workers to, in O'Keefe's words, "falsify" their timecards. "Over the course of two days of training," says O'Keefe in Big Government, "I was paid for four hours of work I never did." If all 600,000 U.S. Census workers were given that much extra pay, says O'Keefe, it would cost taxpayers $43.8 million. Has O'Keefe uncovered...
